Perhaps this is the end.

With the Gold Coast failing to secure enough support to ride in like a bikini-clad white knight to rescue the Commonwealth Games originally set to be hosted by Victoria in 2026, it seems the prospect of the Games taking place at all is vanishing into the night.

Good riddance, some will say. Others, particularly the athletes, will offer up a sad lament for a missed opportunity.

The Gold Coast was seemingly the Games' last hope.
